Captain Steve Gillespie is a training officer with the North Charleston Fire Department. His duties include fire and technical rescue training and Coordinator of the Charleston County Joint Recruit School. In January of 2016, he moved to South Carolina with his family for the opportunity to carry on his passion for training. Steve has over 35 years of experience in volunteer and career departments. After 21 years serving in the FDNY, Steve retired as a Lieutenant from Engine 43, having spent his entire career in the Bronx. During those 21 years, Steve spent 13 years as a firefighter assigned to Squad 41 in the Special Operations Command. During his tenure in the FDNY, Steve was an instructor in FDNY Probationary FF School, FDNY Technical Rescue School as well as lecturing and instructing nationally at the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC). Steve is a peer counselor for Low Country Firefighter Support and lectures on the topic of PTSD from his own experiences.
